Based on a true story, Ben Affleck's gripping Oscar-winning thriller is set during the dark days of the Iranian revolution in 1979. When the US Embassy was stormed by Islamist militants, 52 American staff were taken hostage and a nasty, 444-day-long siege ensued.

But six Americans had managed to escape and were holed up in the Canadian Ambassador's residence, and the CIA had to figure out a way of getting them out of the country alive. Affleck plays Tony Mendez (above), a CIA expert who enters Teheran posing as the producer of an entirely fictitious science-fiction movie he hopes will provide a cover for the six refugees' escape.

Alan Arkin, John Goodman, Bryan Cranston and Tate Donovan co-star in this entertaining and cleverly paced film.
