Film Highlight Sunday

Black Book (2006)

Film4, 11.05pm

In films like 'Basic Instinct and Showgirls', Dutch-born director Paul Verhoeven has not exactly demonstrated a light and subtle touch, but he shows surprising restraint and a real flair for storytelling in this fine drama set in his homeland during the Second World War.

Like most of the countries occupied by the Nazis for the duration of that conflict, Holland had a small but dedicated resistance movement that fought constantly to undermine the brutal and protracted German rule.

In 'Black Book', Carice van Houten (above) plays a pretty young German Jewish singer who gets stranded in the Netherlands when her family are killed. By chance she makes contact with a resistance group, and becomes involved in the dangerous game of seducing German officers in order to get information. Sebastian Koch and Thom Hoffman co-star.

The Net (1995)

Channel 4, 1.50pm

The internet was in its infancy when Irwin Winker made this thriller starring Sandra Bullock. She plays computer programmer Angela Bennett, who finds herself in a world of trouble after accidentally downloading secret government files while playing a video game. With Jeremy Northam.

Force Ten from Navarone (1978)

RTE Two, 2.45pm

In this trashy sequel to the 1961 film 'The Guns of Navarone', Harrison Ford and Robert Shaw lead a group of Allied commandos into Yugoslavia to try and locate a spy who has been been hiding out with partisans. With Edward Fox and Carl Weathers.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (2009)

RTE One, 6.25pm

In the third instalment of the hugely successful animated franchise, Sid the Sloth is kidnapped by an angry Tyrannosaurus and carried to a lost jungle world beneath the ice from which his friends must save him. With the voices of Denis Leary, John Leguizamo, Simon Pegg and Seann William.

Larry Crowne (2011)

UTV, 10.20pm

Tom Hanks directs and stars in this romantic drama about a company man who has a midlife crisis after losing his job and enrols at a university, where he joins a community of outcasts and falls in love with a teacher. Julia Roberts and Sarah Mahoney co-star.

Ruby Sparks (2012)

Sky Movies Drama, 8.00pm

Clever comedy starring Paul Dano as Calvin Weir-Fields, a young novelist who contracts such a bad case of writer's block that he starts going to a therapist. His mind is freed by a vivid dream about a beautiful, quirky girl, but when he starts writing about her he's shocked when she comes to life. With Zoe Kazan and Annette Bening.
