Film Highlight 2609

Salt (2010)

Film4, 9.00pm

Angelina Jolie (above) returned to the action genre in this energetic and modestly entertaining 2010 thriller from Phillip Noyce. Jolie is Evelyn Salt, a tough and resourceful CIA agent whose world falls apart when a Russian defector walks into CIA headquarters claiming that she is a pre-programmed sleeper from the Soviet era who will shortly assassinate the visiting Russian premier.

She goes on the run, and initially it looks like the Russian defector was right, but as the film proceeds at breakneck speed things get ever more complicated. Jolie does well enough as a Bourne-style hero, but the film's action sequences sometimes lack credibility, and there's not much in the script for the actors to hold on to. With Liev Schreiber, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Daniel Olbrychski and August Diehl.

Norbit (2007)

RTE Two, 9.00pm

In this unsatisfying comedy, Eddie Murphy dons the prosthetic fat suit once again to play a voracious vamp called Rasputia who has married a spineless wimp called Norbit (also played by Murhpy). But when a childhood sweetheart turns up out of the blue, Norbit dares to hope. With Thandie Newton.

The Break-Up (2006)

UTV, 12.00am

Watchable romantic comedy from Peyton Reed, starring Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston as an irresponsible slob and his prissy, perfectionist girlfriend. They cannot agree who should have their apartment when they split up, and live together in a warlike atmosphere. With Judy Davis.

Fired Up! (2009)

TV3, 11.40pm

Nicholas D'Agosto and Eric Christian Olsen head the cast of Will Gluck's feeble-minded comedy, playing Nick and Shawn, two cocky high school American football stars who decide to escape from their own training camp and join the cheerleaders' event to find girls. With Sarah Roeme.

LA Story (1991)

RTE One, 12.00am

In Steve Martin's satirical tribute to Los Angeles, he plays Harris K Telemacher, a TV weatherman who's on his way home one night when a freeway traffic sign starts communicating with him and even offering romantic advice. With Victoria Tennant, Richard E Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker.

10 Rillington Place (1971)

BBC2, 12.10am

Richard Attenborough gives a genuinely creepy performance in this dark British crime drama based on the true story of London serial killer John Christie, who raped and murdered six women in his home while the police bullied an innocent man into confessing to the murders. With Judy Geeson.
