RIVERDANCE, 9/11 and Darren's death in Love/Hate have been voted among Ireland's favourite TV moments.

The moment Darren was gunned down by RIRA assassin Lizzie in the final episode of the third series of the hit RTE drama was voted one of Irish TV's top memorable moments with 32pc of the vote.

It came in third position with the first performance of Riverdance as the interval act for Eurovision 1994 finishing top, and coverage of 9/11 behind it, according to a new survey by UPC.

More contemporary moments like Katie Taylor winning a gold medal at the 2012 Olympics features in the top five.

But the fifth best moment overall was also a blast from the past - Miley's affair with Fidelma on Glenroe.

The survey from UPC, showed that Riverdance got 49pc of the vote. Since it's debut 19 years ago, the show has been seen live by over 22 million people in over 350 venues worldwide.

9/11, which won the news category, got 46pc of the overall vote while Darren's death in Love/Hate received 32pc.

The best sporting moment was Katie Taylor's Olympic win at the London Olympic's 2012 followed by other favourites include Packie Bonner saving the penalty at Italia '90, the Irish rugby team winning the grand slam in 2009.

In the drama category, Darren's shooting in Love/Hate was followed by the Glenroe affair between Miley and Fidelma while Liam and Eoghan's kiss in Fair City came third.

After 9/11, the best news items were the death of Princess Diana in 1997 while the Queen's visit to Ireland came second.

Mike Murphy's candid camera prank on Gay Byrne came second to Riverdance in the entertainment category.

"Whether it's from the shared joy of an experience such as Riverdance or Katie Taylor's wine to the despair of 9/11, these moments had us gloed to our screens," said David Kent, content development manager with UPC.
