Claire in line for RTE morning slot

CLAIRE Byrne's new role on RTE's 'Morning Ireland' programme has sparked speculation she may become a permanent fixture on the show.

However, RTE last night insisted the former TV3 and NewsTalk presenter, pictured, was simply brought in to provide holiday cover.

Former 'Morning Ireland' presenter Aoife Kavanagh recently resigned from the broadcaster in the wake of the Fr Kevin Reynolds scandal.

RTE said that since last year Rachel English and Gavin Jennings had been assigned to work full time with Cathal Mac Coille on the programme.

Aine Lawlor, who was recently treated for cancer, is also expected to make a return later in the year.

It is Ms Byrne's first time as a co-presenter on the flagship morning programme but she has made no secret of her desire to continue in the current affairs area.

She recently told the Irish Independent of her love for radio and news -- something that would make 'Morning Ireland' a perfect fit.

"The current affairs side of my career is very, very important to me; I love radio," she said.

Ms Byrne previously presented 'The Daily Show' alongside Rose of Tralee front-man Daithi O Se but that was pulled from the air last March.
