Claire Danes character Carrie in Homeland will plunge into new depths of depression in the highly anticipated new series, the actress has revealed.

"It's pretty bleak in the beginning. She's gone off her meds for all sorts of reasons, which she believes strongly in," she said.

Carrie is always sitting on her own personal ticking bomb, and it's just an impossible dilemma."

New mum Claire says she had to endure a balancing act between working and caring for her baby boy Cyrus.

She said: “I’m figuring it out as we go along. I guess I was so in my cosy mommy bubble and so anxious about returning to work that I had all sorts of exaggerated fears.

“One was ‘What if I never want to work again?’ But I do and it’s been great. The material is very, very dark and it’s so nice to come home and be jarred out of that by this buoyant bubbleball.”

Fans of the US drama were left with a cliff hanger after Brody disappeared into hiding at the end of the last season.

The show’s producer Alex Gansa said the character will return but his role will have to be scaled down.

He is the most wanted man on the planet. By definition, he’s going to be hiding somewhere. And if he’s hiding, that limits what he can do," he said at Summer Television Critics Association tour

"There was still more story to tell between Carrie and Brody. I have no regrets about that. We’ll always sacrifice a degree of believability in order to put two characters together in a dramatic way."

"Brody is on the lam, he's disappeared into a network," Lewis said at a Television Critics Association press tour.

"I think when you do see Brody, what state will he be in? Is he swanning around a yacht on the Cote d'Azur with a bevy of Russian beauties - which I pitched? Is he hidden away? Is he lost? When you do see him, I hope it will be interesting."

The third series is expected to return by the end of the year.

2. Brody won’t appear until at least the third episode. In fact Brody’s entire presence on the hit CIA drama has been scaled back throughout the entire series.
3. Carrie’s mentor Saul becomes director of the CIA. As boss, Saul is forced to decide whether Carrie can be trusted to perform in the country’s best interest.
4. Carrie’s depression sinks to new lows as a result of Saul not trusting her. Danes said: "It's pretty bleak in the beginning. She's gone off her meds for all sorts of reasons.”
5. Carrie will spend the majority of the first part of the series in isolation. Danes explained: "I miss my acting buddies, because Carrie's been in isolation for a good chunk of this season," said Danes, who is partway through filming the season. "And it's only now that she's started to team up with the more familiar characters."
6. The CIA is on trial because it couldn’t prevent the  bombing at the end of season two.
7. The Brody family will remain. "There was unanimous interest in the Brody family," executive producer Gansa said and particularly in "what will their lives be like after this devastating attack"
8. Quinn will play a larger role in the new season. Actor Rupert Friend was rolled out as one of the main stars in the recent promotion and thus looks likely to be a main focus of this upcoming season.
9. Carrie and Quinn may get close. There have been hints that Quinn may become the one person Carrie can turn to with Brody gone and Saul not trusting her.
10. There will be international locations featured. Israel and Puerto Rico to name just two and the CIA launch an international manhunt to find Brody.
