Chris O'Dowd's co-stars say "hard graft" landed him an International Emmy Award for the acclaimed series 'Moone Boy'.

The Sky One show, which is shot on location in his hometown of Boyle, Co Roscommon, won the prize for best comedy series at the New York ceremony honouring excellence in TV programming outside of America.

Cork actress Norma Sheahan, who plays Linda in the show, said that the hard work had finally paid off for O'Dowd (34) and his writing partner Nick Vincent Murphy.

"It was a real passion project for Chris so he is absolutely thrilled," she said. She also paid tribute to O'Dowd's co-writer Murphy, whom she described as the unsung hero of the show.

"I am actually more thrilled for Nick because Chris is already firmly established in the States, but Nick has been writing for years."
