Branching out with charming Chris

John Boland

Written and directed by Christopher Guest (This is Spinal Tap, Best in Show), BBC Two's Family Tree posits Chris O'Dowd as ordinary guy Tom who, with nothing else to do, sets out to discover something about his ancestry.

As always, O'Dowd's a charming presence and there were a few chuckles in this first episode, especially when he agreed to a blind date with a spectacularly dim blonde, but it's hard to know whether it will really engage our affections.

And the acknowledgment by various characters of the camera merely made me wonder at the basic mockumentary approach – why should we believe that a film crew was interested in recording the life of this nondescript guy?
