being david kelly -- stage legend/ builder. . .
Stage Irish: David Kelly"Fifty-five years on stage and nine minutes on Fawlty Towers, and that's what will be on my gravestone". That was the mock lament of David Kelly, who died last February and who was the subject of this week's Cloch le Carn (RTÉ1).
O'Reilly the builder in Fawlty Towers and the one-armed Albert Riddle in Robin's Nest were Kelly's two most famous roles on British TV.
Both were quintessential stage Irishmen, exuberantly overplayed by Kelly, despite Niall Tóibín's insistence that "he didn't sell himself out -- there was no paddywhackery".
Elsewhere in this dutiful tribute, there was a lot of luvvie talk about "the gentleman of our profession" who was "put on this planet to act" -- but, as usual in this series, there was no attempt at proper assessment.
