And here is the news: this show's pretty flawed

Aaron Sorkin became the critics' darling after creating The West Wing and scripting The Social Network, but he's suffered something of a drubbing from American reviewers over his latest TV series, The Newsroom.

Made by HBO and now screened on Sky Atlantic, it began brilliantly with anchorman Jeff Daniels having the same kind of public meltdown as Peter Finch in Network and rubbishing the notion of America as a great country.

That level of inspiration wasn't sustained as the episode progressed and the overall tone seemed an unsure mix of comedy and drama, but with such good performers as Sam Waterson, playing Daniels's boss, and Emily Mortimer as his new producer (and former lover), I'm hopeful that it may yet hit its stride.
