gary barlow: journey to afghanistan

The ubiquitous Gary Barlow heads to the harsh terrain of Afghanistan to perform a concert for British troops. He spends two days with soldiers, sailors and airmen, experiencing life on the base. Barlow faces some daunting tasks including joining the team in the air traffic control tower at Camp Bastion to see aircraft operations in action.

It has been a truly rotten few months for the Domestic Goddess, but here's a chance to be reminded of just how good Nigella is at her job. She shares her favourite Yuletide recipes and a few tips on how to take the culinary hassle out of the festive period, from food that's perfect for those unexpected guests to traditional Christmas recipes with a Nigella twist.

This mini-series (produced by Irish actress Roma Downey) was a huge hit in the US earlier this year, but attracted some controversy over what some perceived to be the deliberate, mischievous casting of an actor who looks very like Barack Obama -- to play the role of Satan. In this episode, Jerusalem is taken by the ruthless leader of Babylon, King Nebuchadnezzar, and the Jews are led on a forced exile back to Babylon where they are then enslaved.


republic of telly christmas special

It's been a great year for the 'Republic of Telly' team -- a lot of their sketches went viral online. In particular, the 'Every Irish Wedding' and 'You Know You're Irish When ... ' skits were shared on many a Facebook wall this year. Here, hosts Kevin McGahern, Bernard O'Shea and Jennifer Maguire celebrate Christmas the traditionally Irish way -- by having a row -- and inviting the extended family, The Viper and all of the other show regulars over to witness it.

In this wartime drama, it's 1941 and Canadian men are at war, leaving wives and daughters to replace them in the bomb factories. Rich young socialite Gladys Witham yearns to do her part, joining Victory Munitions' secretarial pool. Elsewhere, Gladys soon meets the women of Blue Shift, including Betty, a tough farm girl.

It's May 2nd, 2005 and at an old people's home in, Sweden, it is Allan Karlsson's 100th birthday. The home has prepared a party for him. The Mayor and the local press will be there, but this party never gets started. Still in his bedroom slippers, Allan makes his getaway through the window and begins an unlikely adventure.
