RTE One, 12.50am
Ben Stiller (above) gets serious in this absorbing Noah Baumbach film, and delivers an extraordinarily intense and moving performance as a malcontented 40-year-old called Roger Greenberg. Roger is recovering from a mental breakdown and comes to Los Angeles to mind his holidaying brother's house. He has been given two tasks – to look after the dog and not upset his brother's assistant, Florence (Greta Gerwig).
But the dog gets sick and Roger begins a messy affair with Florence as he flounders around the city confronting old ghosts and upsetting practically everyone he encounters.
'Greenberg' is funny but it's also very moving, and Stiller is excellent as a sharp-tongued contrarian who likes to get his retaliation in first.
With Rhys Ifans, Merritt Weaver, Mark Duplass and Jennifer Jason Leigh.
