Height of the war: Brian Gleeson as hitman Jimmy McMahon in Resistance

Though there was much anxiety in advance of the 1916 centenary celebrations about how best to mark the occasion in an appropriate and fair-minded manner, that event now seems like a walk in the park compared with the commemorations to come.

Barbarous acts were committed by both sides during the War of Independence, and as for the Civil War, commemorating that divisive and controversial conflict will surely pose enormous challenges. Drama is as good a way of approaching these problems as any, and this new production from the creators of the acclaimed 2016 series Rebellion is set in Dublin City in 1920, at the bloody height of the Anglo-Irish War.

Written by Colin Teevan, Resistance stars Brian Gleeson as Jimmy McMahon, one of Michael Collins' network of hitmen who've been causing havoc across the capital. Jimmy is a committed republican, and in Rebellion we watched him take part in the 1916 Rising, but his family circumstances are complicated as his older brother Patrick (David Wilmot) is working for the British as a Royal Irish Constabulary officer.

Dublin Castle has attempted to infiltrate the IRA through a network of spies, but Collins has countered this in typically ruthless and decisive manner. In Resistance, Simone Kirby plays Ursula Sweeney, who's a cryptologist in Dublin Castle, while her estranged sister Agnes is working with Sinn Féin's midnight courts: as Ireland lurched painfully towards independence, division and discord were everywhere. Natasha O'Keefee, Catherine Walker, Andrew Bennett and Aoibhinn McGinnity co-star.
