VIDEO: 'The coolest shop owner' ignores armed robber who eventually gives up and leaves
A kebab shop owner was called “the coolest shop owner” ever for ignoring an armed robber and continuing to serve a customer.
Shop owner Said Ahmed was working in his Egyptian Kebab House in Christchurch in New Zealand when the armed robber came in on May 28 at around 11pm.
“I don’t know how I did it,” Ahmed told the Sunshine Coast Daily. “Sometimes teenagers try to scare me throwing eggs.”
He said he initially though the robber was a customer but when he realised what was happening he finished serving another customer and walked away.
The robber then left the store peacefully.
Police released the CCTV footage on Facebook hoping to catch the robber and social media reacted to the “cool” composure of the shop owner.
Ahmed said he believes the man expected to intimidate him and his quick thinking caused confusion.
"I ignored him completely, like “I'm not seeing you”. He had not prepared himself for this action,” Ahmed said.
While he appears cool in the footage Ahmed said he did feel scared. "When he had gone my heart was beating hard."
He said he continues his business as usual but closes earlier at 10pm when the other shops nearby close.
He said his family were his driving factor to remain calm in the situation.
"There is no one to look after my family here," said the 55-year-old who immigrated to New Zealand from Egypt 20 years ago.
"I tell my kids, “be a little brave”. Life can change in a few seconds."
