TWO teenage girls in the US have been charged with animal cruelty after microwaving a kitten in a Vine video.

The six second video shows one of the girls putting the 8-week-old kitten in the microwave and turning it on.

The kitten can be seen going around inside the machine, and looks distressed when it exits.

There is a burst of laughter from the two teens just before the kitten is let out of the microwave.

Police were alerted to the video after several children told their parents about the disturbing footage.

They launched an investigation centred around two 15-year-old girls who they believe made the video.

A Police spokesperson said the investigation is ongoing, and the District Attorney will determine any appropriate juvenile charges to be brought.
