Spain World Cup exit: Cruel memes flood Twitter after defeat of world and European champions

The internet reacted in the only way it knows how - with mocking memes

Smart-Alec Twitter users reacted to Spain’s humbling defeat at the hands of Chile at the World Cup in only way they know how: by hijacking the top-trending #SpainvsChile to fill the internet with cruel memes.

As reigning World and European champions, Spain were among the favourites to win Fifa's tournament being hosted by Brazil.

But even if Spain manage to beat Australia on Monday, it is impossible for the team to re-claim the world title when the results of Wednesday's game and their thrashing by Holland last week are combined.

First in the firing line following the match at the Maracanã stadium, Rio de Janeiro, was star striker Diego Costa, who suffered jibes for having changed his nationality from Brazilian to Spanish in order to play for the national team.

Meanwhile, another user saw the World Cup logo as a prophecy for the performance of Iker Casillas, who was responsible for letting in the seven goals over two matches that knocked Spain out.

One spectator quickly became the grinning poster boy for the defeat, with comedian Russell Brand quipping that he "knows this guy's face better than [his] own."

Dan Snow, the historian and TV presenter and son of journalist and historian Jon Snow, just plain showed off.
