A professor in Jerusalem has gone viral for a photograph which shows him comforting a crying child while he teaches his students.

The professor appears to be well-known for his compassionate attitude, encouraging mothers to bring their babies to class and even allowing them to breastfeed during his lectures.

Sydney Engelberg(67), who has lectured for 45 years, was snapped helping one of his students by comforting her baby so she didn't have to leave his class.

He kept the baby on his hip and happy for the rest of the lecture, allowing the baby's mother to complete the lesson.

His daughter posted about the incident on Facebook after the image went viral, writing "my father is the best in the world".

“The way he sees the concept of getting education is not only learning the dry facts that you need to learn in class...but also learning values. And that’s the very important message that my dad wants to endow to the world.”

The professor's wife, Fredi Engelberg, added that he regularly received 'love letters' as a result of his compassionate actions in class.
