Facebook page bullying Tony Abbott's daughters gets 76,000 likes in two days
Facebook page got over 2,000 likes in the last three hours
A FACEBOOK page dedicated to bullying and objectifying the daughters of incoming Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has gained over 76,000 ‘likes’ since its creation on the 7th of September.
The page features a large number of photographs of the girls, with some users leaving comments such as “that’s a funny looking kitchen” and “I have a massive election right now”.
Updates on the page include a poll on “which of the three daughters you would prefer” and photos of the Abbott family as children.
Some 21 hours ago, the page posted a photoshopped image of two of the Abbott girls with a horse. The image led to large number of homophobic and misogynistic comments, with some posters even going as far as to threaten violence and rape.
Many users are shocked by the page, encouraging others to report the page to Facebook and claiming the page is “disgusting!” and “makes you ashamed to be Australian!” Facebook’s Community Standards states that users “may not credibly threaten others” and that the site “does not tolerate bullying or harassment”.
However, the page has not yet been removed.
Twitter was recently in the spotlight over threats of rape on the social networking site. Colleen Nolan was reportedly distraught after Twitter threats to rape her and bomb her house, and a man was arrested after a barrage of hostile tweets at feminist campaigner Caroline Criado Perez. Many Twitter users boycotted the site for 24 hours during a protest called #TwitterSilence, spearheaded by journalist and author Caitlin Moran.
