A county council has called on the powers of legendary tea maker Mrs Doyle to remind tourists to "go on, go on" and take a break while driving, ahead of the bank holiday weekend.

Mayo County Council has erected a cardboard cut-out of the Fr Ted character, played by Pauline McLynn, on the side of the road as part of its road safety message.

Over the past 10 years, 195 people have been killed and seriously injured during the August Bank Holiday weekend.

Research suggests that driver fatigue could be a contributory factor in as many as 1 in 5 driver deaths in Ireland every year, gardai have said.

And it is hoped that batty, loveable Mrs Doyle is the woman to push the message for drivers to take a break, and have a cuppa throughout their journeys.
