WATCH: Doireann Ní Ghríofa’s atmospheric video poem for Poetry Day Ireland
Poetry Day Ireland is upon us and, in celebration of the event, this year's six ambassadors are releasing a new poem on their social media today.
The theme of the event, in its third year, is Poetry Surprises and there are more than 100 events in major arts venues, cafés, libraries, bookshops, schools, hotels, night clubs, bars, buses, trains and street corners across the country.
There are also a few surprises planned for throughout the day. Check out www.poetryday.ie for more information.
The six ambassadors are Galway poet Elaine Feeney, Maria McManus, who is recognised for her poetry in public spaces projects, bilingual poet Doireann Ní Ghríofa, spoken word poet Stephen James Smith and poetic hip-hop duo Tebi Rex are all helping to bring poetry to the masses.
Doireann is a bilingual writer. Her fourth book is Oighear (Coiscéim, 2017), and she will shortly publish a collaborative book with artist Alice Maher via The Salvage Press.
Doireann is Commissioned Writer for Temple Bar Gallery + Studios 2018, Artist-in-Residence for Cork Midsummer Festival 2018–2019, and an Associate of Trinity College Centre for Literary Translation, Dublin.
