'Poldark' star Aidan Turner ditched his tricorne and took a break from filming the successful BBC series to attend the opening night of 'Private Lives' at the Gate Theatre.

The BBC series will return to TV screens this June and Turner was spotted filming for the series in the English city of Wells last month.

The Gate was heaving yesterday evening as new director of the theatre Selina Cartmell welcomed guests to the show.

Ms Cartmell has taken over from outgoing director Michael Colgan - who retired on April 1 after 33 years with the theatre.

Gay Byrne and his wife Kathleen Watkins, broadcaster Marty Whelan, former president Mary McAleese and Morah and Rex Ryan were among the crowd.

Speaking about her new role, Ms Cartmell said: "I am thrilled and honoured to lead the Gate into the next chapter of its long, distinguished and colourful 89-year-old history."

Noel Coward's 'Private Lives' is directed by Patrick Mason and will run until June 24. The cast includes Peter Gaynor, Esosa Ighodaro, Rebecca O'Mara, Shane O'Reilly and Lorna Quinn.
