Lorraine Maye is director of Cork Midsummer Festival. Originally from Galway, she lives in Cork city with her barrister husband Ray Boland and two-year-old daughter Camille. Cork Midsummer Festival has just announced 'Midsummer Moments', a celebration of arts to be experienced outdoors, at home.
Book: On Fire: The (Burning) Case for a Green New Deal by Naomi Klein
Naomi Klein describes how "humanity has a once-in-a-century chance to fix an economic model that is failing the majority of people on multiple fronts". Now, a few months after the book was published, we find ourselves in a global moment where repurposing and reimagining resources is the only way we can keep everything moving forward.
Music: Other Voices - Courage
Nothing can replace the live experience, but the Courage live-streaming series showcases the breadth of Irish talent set against the beautiful backdrop of some of our most beloved venues and cultural institutions.
Film: Lost in Translation
I'm a total romantic at heart and this film is an absolute beauty. Two lonely people briefly encounter a soulmate in the most unexpected of places and circumstances. Warm performances and a fantastic soundtrack. I watched it again recently, the vibrancy and exoticism of Tokyo making me long for the future when we are able to travel again.
Artist: Sarah O'Brien
We are lucky to have a lovely collection of contemporary Irish art, and Cork artist Sarah O'Brien has a special place in our house. A wonderful piece of her contemplative drawing work sits behind me in all of my Zoom calls. And almost 13 years ago to the day, I met my husband for the first time at her MFA degree presentation in NCAD.
Theatre: Theatre for One, Landmark Productions and Octopus Theatricals
I've been thinking a lot about this project, which we presented as part of the festival in 2019: the transformative power of the live experience… the life-affirming intensity… Our ability to gather and reflect, safely, will be at the core of recovery. The arts will play a vital part in that.
Cork Midsummer Festival runs from June 10-21. www.corkmidsummer.com
