Gabriel Byrne has been nominated for a Tony Award

Irish actor Gabriel Byrne has been nominated for a Tony Award.

He has been nominated for the best performance by an actor in a leading role in a play for his work on the play Long Day's Journey into Night.

Byrne has been nominated for the award alongside Jeff Daniels, Frank Langella, Tim Pigott-Smith, and Mark Strong.

The nominations for the 70th annual Tony Awards were announced today.

The Tony Awards are Broadways highest honours.

Jessica Lange, who also stars in Long Day's Journey into Night, has been nominated for best performance by an actress in a play, alongside the likes of Lupita Nyong’o (Eclipsed) and Michelle Williams (Blackbird).

Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, which stars Carlow actress Saoirse Ronan, has also been nominated for Best Revival of a Play.
