Fair City fans have reached their wits end with Katy O'Brien's kidnapping storyline, but could it be coming to an end this Sunday? Here's five things we've learned since it began.

1. It's been running for an entire year

Katy O'Brien's kidnapping storyline began last May when she went missing, making it one of Fair City's longest-running storylines in history.

"As Fair City has been running for 28 years now, it's difficult to confirm for certain if this has been the longest running storyline in the soaps history, but it is one of the longest storylines in recent years on the show," said a spokesperson for RTE.

2. There will be a "dramatic" double bill this Sunday

The soap missed three days of air time this week thanks to Eurovision, but a "dramatic" double bill will make up for the lost time this Sunday. Could it finally be the day that Katy escapes her captor Ciaran?

3. A petition was started to end it

A frustrated viewer started an online petition two months ago to end the storyline and has since received over 7,700 signatures, however that didn't encourage bosses to speed it up. "Drama, by its nature, deals with a wide variety of topics, from the whimsical to the more sobering," a spokesperson for Fair City told RTE.

"While this particular story is taking time to unfold, it allows us to explore different facets of the drama and how it impacts each of the characters involved from Katy herself, to Ciaran and the family and friends left behind."

4. Katy was kidnapped because of a family drama

Need a refresher on why Katy was actually kidnapped? Following six months of speculation as to who her captor was, Ciaran's identity was revealed in November. Fans learned that Ciaran abducted Katy, played by Dublin actress Amilia Clarke Stewart, because he blamed her brother Emmett for the disappearance and suspected death of his sister. But all family dramas must come to an end in soapland. Come on!

5. Sunday's episode is "not to be missed"

Rumours that the story line will come to an end this weekend have gone into overdrive since Johnny Ward, who plays Ciaran, shared a trailer for the double-bill. "Check out the trailer for this Sunday's One hour special of fair city. NOT TO BE MISSED!" he wrote. Watch the trailer below as tensions rise in Carrigstown.
