Comedian Katherine Lynch has become the latest celebrity to get kicked off RTÉ'S Dancing with the Stars.
The Leitrim woman was in the dance off against singer Dayl Cronin following the results of the public vote on the show. Following the performances, the judges decided to send Katherine and partner Kai Widdrington home, with all three chosing to save Dayl.
Speaking about her experience on the series, Lynch revealed: "This series has been absolute joy. I'm happy to go tonight because there are better dancers here than me. I couldn't have done it without Kai and we are going to be friends forever.
"I'm taking with me a love of dance that I'm absolutely going to keep with me for the rest of my life," she said. "I can't describe the joy it has brought. Everyone here is like a family and it has just been such a special experience."
This week was Icon’s Week on the show and actress Aoibhín Garrihy stole the show with an incredible performance to Beyonce’s Crazy In Love.
Aoibhín and partner Vitali Kozmin danced a routine that Beyonce herself would have been proud of, wowing the judges and audience alike at Ardmore studios in Wicklow.
The performance, which featured a particularly terrifying lift, earned the highest score of the evening with 29 points.
Judge Julian Benson was back in flying form on the panel following his recent bout of pneumonia which saw him missing from the show for four weeks.
“I’m thrilled to be back” Julian revealed. “Thank you to everyone who sent me well wishes and to Darren for keeping my hot seat warm for me.”
First to take to the stage earlier in the evening had been Lynch who channelled Tina Turner with a hip-shaking jive to Proud Mary. Katherine sister Mary was in the audience and she dedicated her performance to her. “Tina is an icon of mine - I got the powerhouse icon. She is the icon’s icon.”
The routine earned Katherine and partner Kai Widdrington 19 points, with judge Julian Benson saying: “Tina Turner eat your heart out. Week after week you come out here as a chameleon. Every week it’s a pleasure to watch you. For me. you are simply the best.”
Brian Redmond added: “I fell in love with you last week and I hope you are here next week for that love affair to continue.”
Red Rock actress Denise McCormack and her partner Ryan McShane chose Amy Winehouse’s Valerie, with Denise admitting: “I’m hoping that this song is just going to make everyone get up and dance.” The pair were in the bottom two last week but admitted they had tried to up their game this week.
Julian Benson remarked: “Last week, I couldn’t believe you were in the bottom two because you didn’t deserve to be there.” Dancer Ryan McShane came under fire from judge Loraine Barry for incorporating foxtrot steps into the quickstep, and she told him: “I hope you didn’t jeopardise Denise’s chances.” They earned a total of 22 points.
Next up was Hometown member Dayl Cronin who danced a cha chat with Ksenia Tzsikhotska. Dayl had already notched up an impressive four tens from the judging panel in recent weeks and earned points tonight. Loraine remarked: “You didn’t step out of the box, you stepped right into the box and gave us a brilliant cha cha cha. There was a little something missing but it was still brilliant.” They scored 25 points.
Former Kerry footballer Aidan O’Mahony and partner Valeria Milova took on the charleston to Ray Charles’ I Got A Woman. O’Mahony is on baby watch as wife Denise is due to couple’s first child next week and admitted his new arrival will have quite the back catalogue of videos of their dad to watch.
“When they get to 18 I’m sure they will be truly embarrassed by them,” he revealed. “We are really excited now to be honest. I’m trying to just spend as much time at home as I possibly can.”
After being praised by the judges and told he was in his “comfort zone” and a contender for the final, Aidan and Valeria scored 29 points - their highest of the series.
Last up, RTÉ’S Des Cahill showed his American Smooth moves to Billy Joel’s Uptown Girl. Clutching a giant sparkly spanner, Des performed a number of lifts with partner Karen Byrne, admitting: “It’s usually the young lads doing to lifts, but we said we would give it a go. This was a fun dance and I really enjoyed it.”
The couple scored 17 points from the judges. There are three weeks left in the series before the winner is crowned.
