First Dates Ireland couple Aine Dunne and Gary O'Brien are still going strong, six months after they met on the popular RTE2 dating show.

Although they have yet to say "I love you", Aine is keeping her fingers crossed that they will be together for a long time.

"I'm very fond of Gary, I have to say," she said. "We haven't said the L-word yet but I'm enjoying his company and we're having great fun together. Long may it last."

Gary, who lives in Donegal, is busy looking for work in Dublin so he can be closer to Aine, who lives in Drogheda.

"It's been hard the past couple of months, him coming down here," said Aine. "He's made a big effort. He was doing a four-hour drive every time.

"I've been up in Donegal a couple of times and they've all been so welcoming. I'm delighted he's coming down to Dublin because it will be much easier."

Make-up artist Aine (24) impressed Gary's parents, with his mother more taken with her than any other girl he has dated.

"He was saying to me, 'My mam has never been like that with someone I've been with before'," said Aine. "I'm an easy-going person. I'm glad I gelled with his family because that was the most important thing."

When accountant Gary (27) applied for the show, he was not sure producers would find someone he liked.

"I'd just got out of a relationship," he said. "I thought nothing of it for seven or eight months and then one night I got a phone call from one of the producers.

"I think they were really banking on me and Aine hitting it off by what they were saying to me. It was a 'don't mess this up' kind of thing."

Aine had not been in a serious relationship before applying for the show and was keeping her fingers crossed that she would find the man of her dreams.

"I had fleeting relationships and nothing was ever amounting to anything," she said. "I saw the opportunity for First Dates and thought, 'I'm just going to do it', because I love the show.

I thought it would be gas if I went on and found someone on it. Luckily, I did."

While Aine was definitely the active type Gary was hoping for, she didn't base what she was looking for on appearance.

"I wanted someone I could have a conversation with and talk for hours, not someone who would just sit there and look pretty," she said.
