Better Call Saul creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould are shocked fans figured out their coded episode titles for the second series.

The first letters of each episode title read "Fring's back" which points to the return of the key Breaking Bad character to the Better Call Saul universe.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, Gould said, “We had this—to us—this very bright idea of encoding the words 'Fring’s Back' in the episode titles.

"And we thought we’d be revealing it maybe sometime over the summer. I guess we really underestimated the genius and hard work of our fans.”

He added, “It’s hard to complain about people paying attention to every aspect of the show. It certainly reminds us again that we better keep all our i’s dotted and our t’s crossed in every aspect of the show.”

However, once it was out in the ether that chicken shop owner and drug kingpin Gus Fring (played by Giancarlo Esposito) was coming back, they worried about disappointing fans as he did not actually appear in this week's highly anticipated finale.

And he may not appear in series three at all either, although his presence has already been felt, and will likely be felt even more next year.

Gilligan told Variety, "It really is on us that we didn’t realize how smart the audience was. We thought that little clue — 'FRING’S BACK' in the titles — would be something Peter could tweet about today, or sometime this week…"

"Or over the summer!" added Gould, who went on to quip, "I think there’s a good reason George Lucas didn’t create a title for the second 'Star Wars' movie that spelled out 'Darth Vader is Luke’s father.'"
