It's a moment everyone dreams about but very few are lucky enough to experience.

Billy Comer, from Galway, was one of the lucky ones back in 1994 when he won £1.1 million on the National Lottery.

Billy and his wife Carmel share their story on a new two-part documentary, We Won the Lotto, which kicks off tonight on RTE One at 9.35pm.

Of the moment he realised they had won, he said, "I checked the Teletext and I could not believe it. we had all six numbers."

Billy and Carmel did not keep the news to themselves and ended up with lots of penpals across the country wishing them well and asking for donations.

"I don't know how these things spread so quick," says Billy.  "It spread like wildfire.  No sooner had we told Betty in the post office, and the next thing the phone was hopping off the wall. People were calling to the door."

Billy revealed they went into the local Glenview bar " which we eventually bought".

The first National Lottery draw took place in 1988 and in those 30 years there have been over 800 Jackpot wins of one million or more.

Less than 10 per cent of millionaire winners go public and 10 per cent of those decide not to give interviews.

We Won the Lotto is a two-part documentary series telling the first-hand stories of people who’ve experienced life changing lottery wins in Ireland over the past 30 years.

While some have gone on to fulfil their dreams, others have misspent their funds.

Each episode features four contrasting stories of winners living here and abroad.

We Won the Lotto starts Monday, February 5th at 9.35pm on RTÉ One
