The new True Detective season two trailer kicks off with Vince Vaughn, who plays a career criminal saying, "Sometimes your worst self is your best self."

It's a tense trailer which also features a troubled-looking Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch and a much grittier looking Rachel McAdams.

In one scene her character, a Ventura County Sheriff, plays with a knife as she talks about a girl who has gone missing, but nobody seems to care.

There's blood, and scars, and physical attacks and the trailer ends on Colin Farrell's furrowed brow.

The first episode will be broadcast on Sky Atlantic on June 22, the day after its US premiere on HBO.

The second series of the hugely popular crime drama series takes a look at the dark balance of sex and power in California.

Creator Nic Pizzolatto recently described it as revolving around "the secret occult history of the United States transportation system" in California.

Movie Pilot has also apparently recently leaked the plot of the first episode.

According to their report, "The season is due to kick off with the dead body of a corrupt politician being found along the Pacific Coast Highway with satanic symbols carved into his chest.

"California Highway Patrol officers Colin Farrell and Taylor Kitsch are assigned to the case. It turns out the victim is a known associate of Vince Vaughn's character and this dead man had a dark side involving some associations with S&M clubs - but perhaps most importantly, the man was in the middle of brokering a big deal that would solve the state's gridlock problem."
