Hollywood actor Casey Affleck had a cringeworthy encounter with Stephen Colbert on The Late Show to rival that of Joaquin Phoenix's interview with Letterman in 2009.

Affleck was in studio to promote his new film Triple 9, but things got off to an awkward start immediately when Colbert questioned his casual dress and called him a 'street corner Jesus'.

Things just descended into the abyss from there as Casey took offence and said that Colbert was implying he was being rude by his choice of attire.

"It is just some playful ribbing Casey Affleck," said Colbert who then continued to talk about his clothes.

"How long are we going to talk about this?" said Affleck, to which Colbert replied, "Until I get to my joke."

Colbert then suggests they should engage in some bare knuckle boxing at the end of the show, and to make matters even more awkward he asks Affleck how many brothers and sisters he has.

"Are you going to fight me?" says Affleck.

"I'm wearing glasses so you couldn't possibly throw a punch at me," replies Colbert.

And so it continues.  Watch through splayed fingers...
