TV3 to go global as they work with US network NBC on creating new content
TV3 wants to go global and is working with US broadcasting giant NBC to produce shows for foreign audiences.
The station’s director of content Lynda McQuaid told the Herald she has worked on creating a “synergy” with the American network over the past six months with the aim of producing programmes to be sold off directly, instead of being broadcast on Irish shores.
“There’s an ability for us to make stuff that may not work here, but sells and works for the diaspora,” she said.
“Last year, The Lazy Chef did average figures for TV3, and it has sold overseas and is doing incredibly well.
“In terms of working with the likes of NBC, I’m focusing on our own generated ideas. Obviously we have programmes likes The Great Irish Menu that is an acquired format, but we want to create [formats] that can be moved off the island to make money,” she added.
TV3 launched its autumn 2015/2016 schedule yesterday which will include coverage of the Rugby World Cup, a new series of garda soap Red Rock and 11 new entertainment shows.
Former RTE stars Brian Ormond and Pamela Flood will also be joining the station with two new series debuting next year, while Irish magician Keith Barry is also included in the new programming.
Crime journalist Donal McIntyre has teamed up with award-winning Irish director Jim Sheridan to produce a documentary for the station on unsolved the Sophie Toscan du Plantier murder.
Food writer Lilly Higgins will also join the Great Irish Bake Off as a presenter.
When asked about TV3 dealing with competition from new station UTV Ireland, Ms McQuaid declined the opportunity to comment.
She previously worked with the BBC before joining TV3 back in March and also revealed she has a wish-list for what she wants to see on TV3 in the future.
“For me it’s about thought-provoking content, we don’t do enough of that here,” she said.
“I would love more drama and entertainment on Wednesday nights too.
“On my wishlist is James Corden’s chat show, it feels like the perfect fit for the TV3 audience,” she said.
