TV3 is launching a new nightly Main Evening News programme at 8pm.

The new "30 minute, fast paced" programme will launch on Monday March 30th incorporating live national, international, business, sports and weather news.

Former Midweek presenter Colette Fitzpatrick will anchor the programme.

A statement from TV reads, "With commuting times becoming longer, and a greater availability of audience in the early peak viewing time, TV3 has chosen the 8pm broadcast slot to provide its viewers with an alternative news time which is the norm throughout continental Europe including: Spain (Cuatro) France (TF1) Portugal (SIC) Italy (RAI)."

The early evening News at 5.30, which averages 152,000 viewers, will continue as will TV3 News at 12.30.

On weekdays the new News at 8pm will follow The Seven O'Clock Show on TV3 and will preempt the main evening news on RTE 1 at 9pm.

TV3 Group Director of News & Public Affairs Programming, Andrew Hanlon, said: “The introduction of ‘TV3 News at 8’ has been planned for some time and forms part of the evolution of TV3’s overall new schedule of programmes and the introduction of landmark shows such as ‘Red Rock’ and ‘The Seven O' Clock Show’.

"For many people, catching the early evening news just isn’t an option as they are still travelling home from work. Now, ‘TV3 News at 8’ follows a long established European tradition, giving viewers the news at a time that suits them.”
