The show is running for eights weeks on Saturday nights as Ray D'Arcy Show breaks for summer

Tommy Tiernan’s move from midweek to Saturday nights is paying off with a boost in ratings.

The third series of The Tommy Tiernan Show has been warmly received by both critics and viewers in its new primetime Saturday night slot on RTÉ One.

The opening episode on May 4, featuring a hugely compelling interview with sports legend Paul McGrath, drew consolidated figures of 331,800.

This includes people who watched the programme live, as well as those who tuned in later the same day, and those who watched the show on catch-up over the next seven days.  It does not include those who watched on RTE Player.

The second episode, which aired last weekend and saw U2’s Adam Clayton speaking about his battle with alcohol addiction, was watched by an impressive 333,900 viewers on the day with a 31 per cent audience share.

The consolidated figures, which will be available later this week, will see an increase in the total number of viewers for the episode.

The move from Wednesday nights to Saturdays at 9.35pm has boosted the comedian’s audience as the first two episodes of this third series have beaten the highest rating episode of series two.

The second series aired on Wednesday nights at 9.35pm last year and the highest rating show, featuring interviews with Imelda May, Blindboy Boatclub, and Nigel Owen, had consolidated figures of 321,000.

The hour-long Tommy Tiernan Show, which features stand-up, a sketch, music and three surprise guests, is airing for eight weeks as The Ray D’Arcy Show breaks for the summer.

The fourth season of D’Arcy’s entertainment chat show, which features five segments and runs to 80 minutes, kicked off in August last year with 298,000 viewers and a 27.8 per cent audience share.

The last episode aired on March 30 and saw Joe Brolly, Mairead Ronan, Dermot Bannon, Pat Shortt and Francis Brennan join Ray in studio, as well as Kilkenny woman Jenny Moylan who spoke about her ten stone weight loss.

The closing episode reached 327,000 viewers and drew a 33.3 per cent audience share while the 2018/2019 season average hitting 323,000 viewers on RTÉ One with 15,000 watching on +1 for a total of 338,000 and an average share of 27.5 per cent.

The Ray D’Arcy Show will return in September.
