A couple who met on First Dates Ireland is still going strong.

Irish dancer Katie Greene and interior designer Ciaran Farrell were matched on the first season of the popular reality dating show.

During their first date, Ciaran appeared painfully shy but viewers did pick up on a spark between the pair as the conversation relaxed towards the end of dinner.

They agreed to meet up after the show but there was just one problem: Katie was set to move to Toronto three weeks later.

But Cupid's arrow had found its mark and the pair refused to let a transatlantic distance get in the way of things. Eight months later, they are very much an item.

Speaking on the Ryan Tubridy Show on RTE Radio One, Katie explained that the pair had a "great" first date.

"We actually had a great date, a really natural and fun date," she said. "Everyone thought Ciaran was way more shy than he was but people don't always appear as they are."

They met up a few times after the show and when Katie moved to Canada they continued to keep in touch. And it wasn't long before Ciaran followed her to Toronto.

"I went off and I followed her across the hills," he said.

"We kept in constant contact and I had already been thinking of going over to see her and was waiting to see how she felt, although I already knew she'd like to see me," he said.

"I hoped on a plane in October and I went to see her for a week. It was brilliant. We went to Niagara Falls, we had Thanksgiving dinner with her friends and went gambling in the casinos.

"On the last night I was there we had dinner in the CN Tower and when we came out, the week had went went so well, that I asked her to be my girlfriend."

While Katie is still based in Toronto, she has plans to move back to Ireland... although she won't say when.

"I have some great things to move home for and now I have one more great thing," she said.

Ciaran said that when it comes to success in dating, the trick is to be genuine.

"Me and Katie were both pretty genuine. At the end of the day we were just two normal people with common interests who fancied each other a little bit."

First Dates Ireland airs on RTÉ2 tonight at 9.30pm.
