Golden Globe winner Saoirse Ronan has revealed she does not have a boyfriend and has no idea how to date.
The actress (23), who spent most of her teenage years on movie sets, told US TV host Ellen DeGeneres that she hasn't a clue about the rules of romance.
When the chat show queen asked the Lady Bird star if she was dating, Saoirse replied: "No, I don't know how to date."
A surprised Ellen asked: "You haven't really dated yet?"
The Carlow actress said: "That makes me sound like I've never..."
Ellen then asked her: "Have you?"
Saoirse replied: "I don't date. I'm not into the whole, 'let's go out for dinner'. I don't even know how to talk about it."
The actress, who is expected to receive her third Oscar nomination on Tuesday for her role as a feisty teenager in the hit movie, said that if someone asked her to go to dinner she "wouldn't know what to do".
The Irish star, who was also Oscar-nominated for Atonement and Brooklyn, then played a game with the chat show host, inviting the American to ask her out on a date.
Ellen said: "No, I'm married."
Saoirse replied: "It's not real. This is how uncomfortable I am."
Ellen relented and said: "Do you want to go out for dinner some time?"
Saoirse then said, to much laughter: "No, you're married Ellen!"
The US broadcaster, who is wed to former Ally McBeal star Portia de Rossi, replied: "That was a set-up!
"Let's find you someone. At some point you're going to have to date. You're beautiful and you're funny and you're smart.
"I have to know what your type is so I can help you."
Saoirse then played Who'd You Rather? which is a regular feature on Ellen's show, where a celebrity says which of two famous people she would rather go out with.
The first two choices were Saoirse's Lady Bird co-star Timothee Chalamet and Dublin actor Colin Farrell.
"I know both of those people. Colin is way older than Timmy, so Timmy," Saoirse said. Next up was Chalamet or pop star and actor Harry Styles.
"Oh, that's tough. Harry is very good in Dunkirk I have to say," said Saoirse.
"I don't know Harry Styles, I don't know what he's like.
"Let me stick with Timmy because even if it's just a platonic relationship, I think we can have a nice companionship together. We are very compatible as companions."
To much laughter, she added: "And Harry's on the road a lot. It's very stressful being with someone on tour."
Ellen said: "You are so bad at this game. Really, you're never going to date."
Her two final choices were Chance the Rapper and singer Bruno Mars.
Told Mars had a girlfriend, Saoirse said: "Companionship is fine.
"Even just a friendship I'm fine with, even if we just email and have a correspondence."
DeGeneres joked: "What decade does she live in?"
Actor Jamie-Lee O'Donnell has tasted stardom before as the confident, catty Eva Maguire in BBC Northern Ireland's angsty teen student drama 6 Degrees, but nothing on the level of Derry Girls.
