Ruth O'Neill quits TV3's Xpose: My idea of success keeps changing
Xpose presenter Ruth O'Neill has announced she's quitting the TV3 show to pursue new opportunities abroad.
The 29-year-old broke the news in a statement released to TV3 on Monday.
Speaking to Independent.ie, Ruth explained that it isn't a decision she made lightly. She has been mulling over her future "for months" and is keen to pursue opportunities in London, Los Angeles or New York.
"Work has been brilliant, it's ticked all the boxes but at the end of the day I just really want to try something new. I've developed so many new skills working at Xpose. I've had such incredible opportunities. I've really been so lucky and I'm not leaving with any regrets.
"But I just feel that I need to try something new," she said.
The Castleknock presenter had already made a name for herself in Los Angeles before joining TV3, where she worked for five years as a reporter for MTV, VH1 and ABC News.
She returned to Ireland in 2015 and joined the entertainment news show last May where she was eventually given a full-time slot on Xpose, alongside fellow rookie Cassie Stokes.
But Ruth explained settling into life back in Ireland has proved to be more of a challenge than she anticipated.
"I've just found it so hard to settle at home. I think anyone who's lived abroad, whether it's Australia or the UK, will understand that it can be tough to adjust to life at home when you've been away for so long.
"All my friends live away and it's been difficult to meet new friends.
"We keep in touch on WhatsApp but it's not the same. It can be really lonely at times. I thought it would be grand but it wasn't as easy as I thought," she said.
Ruth's career with Xpose saw her cover top billed events such as New York Fashion Week, London Fashion Week, the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in Paris and the BBC Music Awards.
"People keep saying 'you have the dream job' and working with Xpose is something I've always wanted to do but I know that it's time for me to leave. I don't want to get too comfortable. I need a new challenge.
"My idea of success keeps changing but my main priority is to be happy," she said.
"I don't know what's going to happen and I'm a little bit nervous but I know I want to take the chance to try something new now."
Ruth hasn't made any concrete plans but is positive about her future prospects.
"We'll see what comes my way. My boyfriend lives in London and I'd be keen to try something there but I'm not ruling anything out.
"I'm in the last year of my twenties and I'm just thinking 'why not!', if I leave it any longer I might be too scared to move."
Debbie O’Donnell, series producer of Xposé, said: “Ruth has been a pleasure to work with, she has brought a great deal to the show in terms of her celebrity knowledge, fashion and beauty tips.
"We wish her the very best for the future and will be so sad to see her leave Xposé, she will be very much missed.”
