RTE's flagship news programme Six One is attracting a young audience, the State broadcaster has said.

The programme, presented by Keelin Shanley and Caitriona Perry, has seen a slight fall overall in viewers compared with the same period last year.

Six One averaged 433,000 viewers from January to March of 2017, while it has averaged 430,000 during the same period this year.

However, the show increased its share of the coveted younger demographic, with adults between 15 to 34 increasing by 26pc and adults aged 20 to 44 increasing by 18.4pc.

"Each month showed increasing gains for younger viewers, which is a key priority for every media organisation, including RTE," a spokesperson told the Herald.

Six One has been presented by Shanley and Perry since January.

They replaced long-time hosts Bryan Dobson and Sharon Ni Bheolain, who departed the show to present Morning Ireland and the Nine O'Clock News, respectively.

Ni Bheolain, who also works on Crimecall, has joined Eileen Dunne at Nine O'Clock, which has also increased its 15-34 viewers by 10.3pc since the January-March period last year.

The new presenting partnership is the first time the Six One has had two female hosts.

"I don't think we got it because we are women; I don't think we would have wanted it on that basis either," Shanley said shortly after they joined the programme.

Perry called their appointment "a brave and enlightened choice by our boss".
