Teresa Mannion hopes her performances on RTE’s Dancing With The Stars will be an “inspiration” to women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.
The RTE News reporter was diagnosed herself four years ago and she hopes her participation in the programme will encourage women who face the same diagnosis and treatment.
Teresa dedicated last Sunday’s performance to women living with the condition.
“There have been people who said they were inspired by that. I guess I am somebody who is in my 50s and I went through that journey four years ago. I had chemotherapy and radiation and all of that,” she told the Herald.
“Here I am. I’m cancer-free and in a really good place. I’m fine and I would like to think I would inspire women of my age who are going through a cancer journey. It’s not a death sentence.”
She was initially hesitant to discuss her experience on the show, but bosses reassured and encouraged her.
She chose Kelly Clarkson’s song Stronger for her performance and found the lyrics resonated with her.
“I wasn’t sure initially that I would mention the cancer but they felt it was an important part of my journey and that’s how the Kelly Clarkson song came about,” she said.
“Initially I was a bit hesitant but, the more I practiced to it, the more the words started to resonate with me.
“It is true, it has made me stronger. I don’t know where I got the courage to do this. I wouldn’t have done this four years ago, I absolutely wouldn’t have done it.”
Teresa is currently in joint bottom place on the leaderboard with Dr Eva Orsmond, having scored 31 points each.
