Revealed: Catt Sadler's reported salary - half of E! News co-host Jason Kennedy's seven figure sum
Former E! News host Catt Sadler's reported salary with the network has been leaked in the wake of her quitting since discovering her male co-host made twice as much as she did.
The 46-year-old had worked at the entertainment news station for 12 years and hosted The Daily Pop in addition to her role at E! News. While recently renegotiating her contract, she says she pushed to earn the same as her co-host Jason Kennedy, but says she was denied by the network.
"Information is power. Or it should be. We are living in a new era. The gender pay gap is shrinking, although admittedly we have a long way to go. And well, I learned this first hand. My team and I asked for what I know I deserve and were denied repeatedly," she wrote on her website after she finished her last day.
"Catt’s salary was at about $600,000 per year. Jason is around $1 million a year, maybe $1.2 million at most," an insider told Us Weekly. "He was making more, but this has nothing to do with a male vs. female thing/. It has nothing to do with gender, but rather seniority and Jason’s ranking at the company."
E! released a statement saying: "E! compensates employees fairly and appropriately based on their roles, regardless of gender. We appreciate Catt Sadler’s many contributions at E! News and wish her all the best following her decision to leave the network."
Sadler made it clear that she takes no issue with Kennedy, whom she still considers a friend, saying his "hands are tied".
"He has done right by me in every respect. It hurts me deeply to see that some are vilifying him. If you’re angry, rightfully so, direct that emotion at the decision makers who failed us, not him," she wrote on Instagram.
After coming under criticism, Kennedy's wife, former model Lauren Scruggs also took to social media to defend him.
"I believe in female empowerment and gender equality, but it’s heartbreaking that a network is being deemed sexist when that is simply not true," she said.
"At one time my husband had a female co-anchor on E! News who made 3 times his salary. Women are paid accordingly on this network, and the difference in his salary versus hers did not affect Jason. He knows there are always more components to consider when determining one’s salary than gender alone."
It's believed Scruggs is referring to Giuliana Rancic, who recently left the network to pursue new opportunities. During her time there, Rancic was the station's best known name and had worked there for more than a decade, also working as managing editor of E! News in addition to being lead anchor and Fashion Police alongside the late Joan Rivers.
Sadler released a detailed statement explaining why she decided to go public with her salary issues, saying: "It's almost insulting because you know you work really hard. I'm a single mom of two kids. I've given my all to this network.
"I've sacrificed time away from my family and I have dedicated my entire career to this network. And when you learn something like that, it makes you feel very small and underappreciated and undervalued. It's heartbreaking...If I stay and do the easy thing, I don't serve myself and I don't serve every other female in the world.
"It's like I now feel inspired and empowered by these women before me who refused to be silent."
