Red Rock domestic violence scenes 'will shock fans'
Red Rock actor Stephen Cromwell has admitted scenes of his character Keith attacking a woman will shock many of the programme's fans.
Tonight's two-hour special episode of the popular drama will see Keith Kiely physically assault a woman.
Cromwell's character has built a strong following among viewers since Red Rock began two years ago.
The actor explained that his character has grown tired of being treated "like an idiot", and a female friend pays the price.
The woman owes him money and when she mentions his late brother's name, Keith loses his temper and attacks her.
"When I got the script I thought, this is going to be delicate. This needs to be done in a certain way.
"A lot of people like Keith. Indeed, I've been approached by a lot of women who just love him. The challenge was to be able to do something like this without losing my fan base," he told the Herald.
"He loses his temper in the moment. He's trying to get the money she owes him and she's screaming at him.
"She mentions his brother Darren who died two years ago and when he hears that, he goes crazy and violently attacks her."
With violence against women a major problem in society, the Stillorgan man (27) is glad the TV3 series is tackling the subject.
"It needs to be done. If it's out in the street and it's happening it should be done. It's supposed to replicate real life and what's going on. I don't think any topic should be untouchable," he said.
Red Rock returns to TV3 tonight at 9pm.
