Radio rivals Matt Cooper and Ivan Yates set to step into Vincent Browne’s shoes on TV3’s Tonight
IVAN Yates and Today FM’s Matt Cooper will be putting their radio rivalry aside to work together on TV3’s revamped version of Tonight with Vincent Browne.
Although the pair will soon front rival drivetime shows when Yates takes over the 4 to 7pm slot on Newstalk, they will be on the same side in their new TV gig.
It is understood they will co-host the current affairs programme two nights a week, while hosting separately on the other two nights.
Both men have previously filled in for veteran journalist Browne, who stepped down from the show – one of TV3’s most popular – last July after 10 years.
TV3’s head of factual Aoife Stokes and director of programming Bill Malone had the task of finding someone to fill Browne’s shoes, amid speculation that the time-slot could also change in the autumn.
Yates and Cooper declined to comment when contacted by the Herald about taking over the programme.
However, it is understood that all will be revealed at TV3’s autumn schedule launch next week in the National Concert Hall.
When asked recently about replacing Browne, Yates said TV3 had yet to make contact with him, but he “would be interested” in the late night slot.
“I’m always delighted to talk to Ballymount about anything,” he said.
“I’ve enjoyed past associations with it, but I’m long enough around in media to know that someone else picks up the phone.
“I don’t have an agent or anything, and at 57 I’m very laid-back about all this nonsense. Having been through bankruptcy, politics and bookmaking, I take it all as it comes.”
Last week, it was announced that Yates was taking over the drivetime slot from Sarah McInerney and Chris Donoghue.
