Poldark producers initially feared that Aidan Turner 'wasn't sexy enough' for lead role
Poldark producer Damian Timmer was concerned Aidan Turner wasn't sexy enough for the lead role.
The 32-year-old actor won himself legions of fans when he took on the role of Ross Poldark in the 2015 series, with a shirtless scene particularly memorable for many.
However, speaking at a Royal Television Society event recently, composer Anne Dudley revealed the show's boss Damian was concerned Aidan didn't have the looks for the lead.
"It is true, Damien did ask me, 'Do you think women will find Aidan attractive?' " Anne laughed. "I said, 'I don't think you will have a problem.'"
And Anne was right, as Aidan's shirtless scything scene has gone down in television history.
Viewers are hoping for similar sexy scenes when the BBC show returns later this year for a second series. The cast recently finished filming the season, but writer Debbie Horsfield dashed hopes when she revealed that Aidan is more likely to remain clothed for these episodes.
"Unfortunately autumn is very chilly in Cornwall, so he won't be doing any more of that", she said. "You see a couple of moments in the bedroom where Ross has no top on, but that's as raunchy as it gets. I think it's quite subtly done to be honest."
In a recent interview with The Independent newspaper, Aidan defended the show's nudity as being necessary for the scenes.
"When you’re doing love scenes, clothes tend to get discarded. You can’t really escape that, that’s got to be in the show," he explained.
However, he admitted he is still struggling to come to terms with his 'sex symbol' status.
"I don’t know," he replied when asked about the attention he now gets from the opposite sex. "It’s a little awkward!"
He'll have to get used to it though, as it was recently rumoured that Aidan has signed on to star as Poldark in episodes for the next five years.
