Outraged Strictly fans calling ‘fix’ over Aston’s shock exit and perfect 40 for Debbie McGee
Fans are still reeling in the wake of Strictly favourite Aston Merrygold's shock exit from the show on Sunday night, with many calling the result a 'fix'.
The former JLS star faced Saturdays singer Mollie King in the dance off and the deciding vote fell to judge Shirley Ballas who opted to save Mollie.
Despite being the bookies' favourite to win and achieving impressive scores each week, Aston was the sixth celebrity dancer to depart.
Fans were horrified and took to Twitter to voice their anger.
This STINKS!!!!!! Really. It feels DODGY and just weird. I like Molly but Aston is MILES better. I'm GUTTED. And confused— Mariaaaaarrrghhn Eeeeeeks 👻🦇💀👺 👹 (@MarianKeyes) November 5, 2017
Absolute joke! The whole show, Debbie getting 40, Aston leaving. FIX FIX FIX #Strictly— Joanne (@JoanneMacArthur) November 5, 2017
Well that’s Strictly done for me, for head judge to vote against Aston Marigold the best dancer in the show against Molly King it’s a fix— CathyB (@TinyBlondeFairy) November 6, 2017
Craig giving Aston a 4 basically put the nail in the coffin! Ridiculous! Can't believe one of the best dancers has left so soon!!! #Strictly— Alesha Dixon (@AleshaOfficial) November 5, 2017
Couldn’t be more shocked that Aston has gone. The judges should be absolutely ashamed! Never seen such unfair treatment of a celeb #Strictly— Rebecca King (@R3BECCAKING) November 5, 2017
This is one of the worst things to happen on strickly ever! Why does Aston have to go home! He was robbed! #Strictly— tweetie bird 🐦 (@Melissa99082628) November 5, 2017
However, some did point out that the public need to vote for the dancers they want to see remain in the competition and could have saved Aston from the dance off (and resulting departure) by voting for him in the first place.
Many fans also questioned the judges' collective adoration for Debbie McGee, who achieved the first perfect 40 following her dance on Saturday night.
The former magician’s assistant is the first to earn four tens so early in the series. Debbie and partner Giovanni Pernice collected 40 for their tango to The Black Eyed Peas’ I Gotta Feeling.
The routine created Strictly history as judge Craig Revel Horwood fell to his knees and bowed down to McGee while Darcey Bussell said she had never seen a tango like that.
Bruno Tonioli said it was like “watching a tango masterclass” while head judge Shirley Ballas labelled it “outstanding”.
However, many fans on social media did not agree.
I feel like the glitter bubble has burst for me. All the happiness is gone. It all feels very odd. And all the fawning on Megee?— Mariaaaaarrrghhn Eeeeeeks 👻🦇💀👺 👹 (@MarianKeyes) November 5, 2017
Debbie constantly overmarked and overrated. Really Craig? Keep your dignity #Strictly 🙄— Amy Saunders (@AmySaunders26) November 4, 2017
Just watched Debbie again as thought perhaps I had missed something the first time, no, still looks awkward to me. Don’t get it. #Strictly— Mandy Copleston (@MTCopleston) November 4, 2017
