The Swedish actor won an Emmy for his role in Big Little Lies, and stopped on his way to accept the award for a quick kiss on the lips with his co-star - while her husband Keith Urban looked on and applauded. That's one way to say congrats…

Sexy handmaids

The 69th Emmy Awards host Stephen Colbert's opening monologue was largely a success, but a couple of moments gave viewers pause - for one, a troupe of dancing handmaids who tore off their robes to reveal glittering showgirl bodysuits. There were a handful of men mixed in, but the bit proved divisive.

Not as divisive, however as…

Sean Spicer

Yes, the former White House press secretary made a surprise cameo. After Colbert quipped: "Unlike the presidency, Emmys go to the winner of the popular vote," he wheeled out Spicer, who borrowed Melissa McCarthy's SNL podium to remark on the huge crowd size. There were a lot of shocked faces, a few laughs, and plenty of angry Twitter users who criticised the gag as tone-deaf.

Netflix misses out

Many predicted the Emmys would be a showdown between Netflix and HBO, but despite its 91 nominations, the streaming network missed out in the major categories. American site Hulu ended up beating Netflix and Amazon Video to become the first streaming service to win Best Drama Series for The Handmaid's Tale.

Alec Baldwin's Trump shout-out

There was much made of Donald Trump's failure to win an Emmy on Celebrity Apprentice. Alec Baldwin, who won Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy for his Trump skit on SNL, began his acceptance speech with: "I suppose I should say, at long last Mr President, here's your Emmy."
