After Colbert quipped: "Unlike the presidency, Emmys go to the winner of the popular vote," he wheeled out Spicer, who borrowed Melissa McCarthy's SNL podium to remark on the huge crowd size. There were a lot of shocked faces, a few laughs, and plenty of angry Twitter users who criticised the gag as tone-deaf.
Netflix misses out
Many predicted the Emmys would be a showdown between Netflix and HBO, but despite its 91 nominations, the streaming network missed out in the major categories. American site Hulu ended up beating Netflix and Amazon Video to become the first streaming service to win Best Drama Series for The Handmaid's Tale.
Alec Baldwin's Trump shout-out
There was much made of Donald Trump's failure to win an Emmy on Celebrity Apprentice. Alec Baldwin, who won Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy for his Trump skit on SNL, began his acceptance speech with: "I suppose I should say, at long last Mr President, here's your Emmy."
