Paparazzi trying to snap some coveted behind-the-scenes shots of Love/Hate season five were given a rude awakening this summer.
Cast members eager to keep major storylines under wraps started pelting them with rotten eggs.
The actors in question were the extended family of John Connors - the settled Traveller who plays the part of pipe bomber Patrick.
"We shot some scenes on the travelling site where I live, " he said at the RTE autumn launch.
"A few of my family were cast in the show; when they saw the paps they ran after them, threw some eggs and swore blind."
John (24) recruited some of his cousins to play extras in the show, which filmed on their halting site.
“If there was a line in the script up for grabs they’d all come running, or I’d audition them for fake parts – it was great fun,” reveals John.
Love/Hate has earned John plenty of respect from his family, as he admitted they were not too keen on his career choice initially.
“When I first started acting most of my family didn’t know what to think, because when you’re a Traveller you have to do manly things, so it was a shock for them.
“It took them a few years to get their head around it and now they like it – I also have dozens of cousins now wanting to be actors, which is nice,” he said.
Last year John starred in Mark O'Connor's feature film, 'King of the Travellers' with Love/Hate co-star Peter Coonan.
MasterChef Ireland won't be on the menu this autumn. RTE, which is due to unveil its new season line-up any day now, put plans for a third series of the cookery competition into the freezer after failing to attract a new sponsor to help foot the €2m production bill.
