Outlander is one of the most popular shows on television - it has time travel, romance, action and not to mention its now-infamous sex scenes.
Irish actress Caitriona Balfe (37) takes centre stage in most of these set-ups. But what's the magic behind it?
"Well, she's great with anatomy and the men wear kilts, so it's easy access," she told Stephen Colbert on The Late Show.
Balfe, from Co Monaghan, has been bus yon the promotional tour for the third season of Outlander this week, hitting the US chat show circuit and giving in-depth interviews alongside co-star and onscreen husband Sam Heughan, who plays Jamie. In conversation with Ryan Seacrest and Kelly Ripa, she said she almost didn't get the career defining role due to a passport mix up.
"I definitely was going to take it, I almost didn't get to," she explained. I had booked a trip to India and I'd sent in my passport to the Indian embassy and then I found out they wanted to test me and I was probably going to have to fly to London so I was straight away on the phone to this embassy, saying, 'I need this passport back. I don't care about the trip, I just need my passport'. But they said it was being processed.
"Eventually they sent Sam [Heughan] to LA instead. I didn't get my passport back for two weeks and then it came back with an Indian visa and I didn't get to use it."
While she might be making waves with her acting career now, with two Golden Globe nominations under her belt, it was her high profile modelling career that propelled to her new heights of fame, including being the only ever Irish Victoria's Secret model. And like all good supermodel stories, she was discovered packing bags for charity while studying theatre at DIT Rathmines.
"I was in college in Dublin studying theatre, but I got scouted when I was in Dublin. I did that for eight, nine years. I was packing bags for an MS charity and this guy came in and gave me his card and mortified me in front of everyone in the shopping centre and then I started," she added.
She initially took a year out to explore modelling, but enjoyed a lucrative catwalk career before transitioning into acting.
