The new presenters of RTE's Six One news have spoken of their reaction after their first broadcast this evening.

Keelin Shanley and Caitriona Perry appeared in their new roles for the first time on tonight's Six One.

Ms Shanley said the day "went in a flurry" but that she is delighted nothing went wrong.

"It's a credit to the team who are just brilliant. Nothing went wrong which was a relief and I'm looking forward to the next few days. Caitriona and I get on great and worked together before so we are really excited."

Speaking to Independent.ie, Ms Perry said things have been particularly hectic given that she only moved back from Washington DC on New Years Eve.

"I just moved back from Washington DC on New Year’s Eve so it has been a hectic last week of planning and rehearsing and unpacking. It was brilliant to finally get going on air tonight," she told the Independent.ie.

"It’s a big show with a great team behind it so we really wanted to do a good job. Having worked on my own for the much of the last four years, it has been wonderful working with Keelin, we’re having a lot of fun. There was such positive feedback from viewers to our first show. If the audience was happy, we’re happy. Now the expectation of the first one is over, it’ll just be a case of business as usual from here on."
