'If it wasn't for Xpose, I wouldn't leave the kids,' says mum-of-two Karen Koster

TV3 star Karen Koster has dropped her three-day week and started working four days after station bosses told her they needed her more on Xpose.

But the popular presenter told the Diary that if it weren't for the fact that she relishes working on TV3's showbiz programme, she wouldn't have agreed to it.

The mum of two, who has Finn (23 months) and John (9 months) with husband John McGuire, said the new shift change came about at the start of this month after a discussion with management.

The programme has just four presenters now after it was revamped last September.

"They were like, 'We actually think that we need you more.' So that's very flattering and part of me was going, 'I'm delighted that's the way.'

"And if it wasn't this job, I don't think I'd leave the kids. It has to be a job that you're passionate about and you absolutely adore and makes it worth your while.

"So that means that it's the right decision for me, but I can't help but think about them when I'm at work and miss them, like any other mum."

She said that it definitely makes a difference working an extra day.

"It does feel busier, that one extra day," she said.

"With three days, you still felt like you were with the kids more than you were at work. Whereas now, it's tipping in the other direction, but the boys are happy about it.

"And to be honest, it was probably harder on me because by Thursday evening, I was thinking that I had hardly seen them all week.

"It's just trying to make the moments count when they are awake because bedtime is early.

"So you are kind of tempted to clean up the house when they're still awake as otherwise, you're doing that at 10 o'clock at night.

"But now I'm like, 'No.' I just have to try and live with the mess and make sure I give them as much time before they go to sleep."

There will be some massive changes in store for TV3 staff when the group brings in a new schedule change in January as it switches to a three-station company.

Huge speculation has surrounded key TV3 programmes amid rumours they may be moved to 3e or 3be as part of the revamp.

Karen said that while she doesn't know if there will be many changes made to Xpose in 2017, moving the time slot of the show to 7.30pm and 8pm has been a "seismic shift".

"To be at a prime-time slot is huge so it's been really exciting. There's a few changes in terms of where our set will be based, so internally, there have been lots of changes.

"That's all I know for now," she said.
