RTE presenter Claire Byrne has said she is unfazed by her ex-colleague Pat Kenny’s return to prime time current affairs TV.

Byrne, who returned to our screens last Monday with Claire Byrne Live, previously worked with Kenny on RTE’s Prime Time.

Last week, TV3 announced that Kenny will front a new current affairs show with Colette Fitzpatrick on Wednesday nights.

“I think that if you were an executive in any broadcast organistaion in this country not to have Pat Kenny on the television is insane,” Claire (41) told today's Irish Daily Mail.

“He should be on television and it’s perfect for him.”

“Irish people love current affairs to the more we do, the more viewers and the more interest it generates across the board. I love competition. I really do. It also gives you a kick up the backside.”

“I’m very interested to see what Pat and Colette will do. Will they do things differently? Will they have really good ideas? All of that keeps [everyone at the top of their game].”

Kenny, who began his broadcasting career in the 1970s,  is to receive the Irish Film and Television Academy's Lifetime Achievement Award next month.

Claire Byrne's career in RTE has been going from strength to strength. In January 2015, she returned to work at the national broadcaster ten weeks after the birth of her second baby, to launch Claire Byrne Live, and present Saturday with Claire Byrne on RTÉ Radio 1.
