A 39-year-old Irish woman has revealed how applying for First Dates Ireland was her way of overcoming grief after her brother's death.

Erinna appears on tonight's episode and bravely shares a very embarrassing, but hilarious, dating story (about farting on previous date) with her potential love interest.

Tonight's date is her third date ever, and her first in 16 years.  She was in a long term relationship which broke down after her brother died five years ago.

"I kind of just, from the grief obviously, I just dropped out of life," she told Nicky Byrne and Jenny Greene on 2FM.

"I broke up with my long term partner because [grief] kind of clarifies things for you and I was like, this isn't working.  So I was on my own then and kind of working through things."

Erinna revealed that she "wasn't engaging" in things and when she started coming out of it she felt like she needed to "get moving".

"I feel like my brother would want me to get out there and start living again," she said.

"It's just grief, it's just grief unfortunately, but I was kind of sitting at home and I was on my phone every evening and I was playing little battle strategy games and I thought, I'm hiding from life.  I need to get out there again."

Part of her plan to "launch" herself back on the dating scene involved applying for First Dates Ireland.  She said she had no reservations about appearing on the show or sharing her hilarious dating tale.

"I think at this stage of my life I've come to realise there's always going to be naysayers and there's always going to be people who don't like you and there's always going to be someone with something to say and you just have to get on with it," she said.

"You can't live your life for those people.  You're not living your life at all so you just have to be like, 'whatever' and move on and do what you want to do and be brave."

Speaking about dating again, she added, "It's literally like an adrenalin shot, dating, going on the First Dates show.

"I knew if I faced my fears in such a terrifying way, everything else will be plain sailing afterwards."

Erinna's date features in tonight's episode of First Dates Ireland, RTE 2, 9.30pm.
